.....it's a load of balls!

This HDRI project and was inspired by the Image Lighting experiments of Jaime Vives Piqueres. I was also interested in learning about, for me, some new techniques in POV-Ray, namely image maps - pool balls are ideal for this!

> Includes
Only standard POV-Ray includes were used in creating the image. MegaPOV was required for the HDRI lighting aspect.
> Textures
Fun and Games! The colours used for the balls and table cloth were basic pigments with a nice shiny reflective surface used for the balls. Material maps were used on each of the balls for the numbering and the spots and stripes. Each was individually created in Photoshop and saved as a .png file to index the colours. In Photoshop, only three colours were used; black, white and red. The pigments were then mapped, using the material_map function, to the png indexes. Very simple but very neat.
> Objects
The pool balls are unsuprisingly a series of spheres with the table being constructed from a number of boxes. Each of the cushions, although you can't see with the camera used for the final image, are rotated 30deg to give a nice shadow effect.
> Scene
The remaining aspect to the scene was the .hdr image used for HDRI lighting. In this instance, i used the The Kitchen probe create by Jaime Vives Piqueres. I think the HDRI image works well in the final picture giving some nice reflection on the pool balls.
> Post Processing
The depth of field effect was added afterwards using Depth of Field Generator Pro in Photoshop. In this instance a simple vertical gradient depth map was applied - focus on the bottom set of balls. |
